How to Tint, Tone, and Shade Colors

When one has just started the process of learning how to paint, it is important to be able to tint, tone, and shade the colors as needed. In order to create a piece of art that is easy to look at, tinting, toning, and shading the colors will bring harmony to the piece. Here is how to tint, tone, and shade colors.

Tint- Adding white to the color, which increases lightness.

Tone- Adding grey to the color, which decreases intensity.

Shade- Adding black to the color, which increases darkness.

Start off by mixing your desired color. I have mixed an orange using cadmium yellow and cadmium medium red hue.

You then want to mix a grey. I use ivory black and titanium white to mix the grey. Another way to mix a grey is by mixing ultramarine blue and burnt umber to create a black, then add titanium white.

Separate your main color mixture into 3 piles.

Tint

Tone (Be careful not to add too much grey as it can turn your mixture green)

Shade (Be careful not to add too much black as it can turn your mixture black)

Overall, this process will help your work come together and create depth. Check out more information about tint. tone, and shade here.
